Andean squirrel
The Andean squirrel (Sciurus pucheranii) is a tree squirrel endemic to Colombia where it lives in the montane forests and cloud forests of the Cordillera Occidental and Cordillera Central of the Colombian Andes, at altitudes between 2000 and 3300 meters (6600 and 10800 feet). It is a small species with a body length of about 14 cm (6 in) and a long tail. It has soft, reddish-brown fur, a dark tail, and yellow underparts. It is thought to be dated but has not been studied, and the International Union for Conservation of Nature has assessed its conservation status as lacking data. Explanation
The Andean squirrel is a common tree squirrel, generally as large as the eastern gray squirrel of North America. However, it is much smaller, with a body length of about 14 centimeters (5.5 in) and a tail of 12 to 16 centimeters (4.7 to 6.3 in). Although there are few records of its weight, it is usually between 100 and 140 grams (3.5 and 4.9 oz). It has soft, silky fur, red-brown on most of the body, falling to gray-yellow in its parts. The tail fur is darker than the body fur, and some Andean squirrels have a distinctive dark band running down their sides and/or a black patch on the back of their head. Women have six breasts.[3]
Distribution and accommodation
It lives in montane forests and cloud forests in the Cordillera Occidental and Cordillera Central of the Colombian Andes, at altitudes between 2,000 and 3,300 meters (6,600 and 10,800 ft). Like the tree squirrel, it lives among Cecropia trees, palms, and tree ferns. It is thought to be endemic, but so much is known about its behavior, population and habitat that it is currently listed as Deficient by the IUCN.[1][3]
